Jancis Robinson calls Clos Saint-Jacques "always regarded as a Grand Cru in all but name" - it was never promoted in 1937, purely for historical reasons, despite quality that rivals the Grand Crus surrounding it. The vineyard was split in 1954 among four domaines; Fourrier's own share, planted on old vines, is one of only four ways to taste this site at all.

    A hard year before it was a good one. Frost in April cut yields severely across much of Burgundy, and what survived needed careful sorting. What made it into bottle from attentive growers is honest, mid-weight Burgundy - just not much of it.
