Volnay 1er Cru 'Les Santenots'

Here's a real oddity: this vineyard physically sits inside the commune of Meursault, not Volnay. But red Pinot Noir grown here has been sold as Volnay for generations, because growers long ago noticed the market simply wanted Volnay more than it wanted red Meursault. The soil has noticeably more clay than most of Volnay, which shows up as a fuller, richer wine than Volnay's usual delicacy - still without Pommard's grip.
