Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region, and its most tightly regulated — a strict ageing-based classification (Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva) has shaped its reputation for over a century. Tempranillo is the backbone grape almost everywhere.

Rioja Alavesa is the smallest and highest of Rioja's three sub-zones, its vineyards climbing the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria mountains in the Basque Country. Cooler and higher than its larger neighbour Rioja Alta, it tends to produce wines with more perfume and freshness alongside Rioja's usual structure.
