Denis Bachelet

Denis Bachelet has run this 4.3-hectare Gevrey-Chambertin estate almost single-handedly since 1983, when he was 20 and his grandfather had just died, leaving vines that would otherwise have gone dormant.

His motto is "la finesse avant tout" — finesse before everything — and the wines back it up: some of the oldest vines in Gevrey (planted in the 1930s), farmed sustainably, made in a building that used to be the village post office. Production is tiny and the wines are effectively allocation-only, coveted well beyond what the domaine's low profile would suggest.
